NFPA MAINTENANCE REQUIREMENTS

In order to better regulate critical power battery backup systems in institutions, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) established stringent maintenance requirements on critical power equipment.

CODE NFPA-110

Code NFPA-110, The Standard for maintaining Emergency and Standby Power Systems provides specific requirements for testing of an emergency generator (one carrying National Electrical Code 700 loads).  The standard requires the provision for an alternate source of electrical power in buildings and facilities in the event a normal electrical power source fails. Systems include power sources, transfer equipment, controls, supervisory equipment, and accessory equipment.

Section 8.3.6.1 of NFPA-110 calls for the maintenance of lead-acid batteries, including the monthly testing and recording of electrolyte-specific gravity (when applicable or warranted) or battery conductance testing.

CODE NFPA-111

Code NFPA-111, The Stored Electrical Energy And Standby Power Systems provides specific requirements for routine operational and inspection testing of standby per systems.  The standard requires the provision for an alternate source of electrical power in buildings and facilities in the event a normal electrical power source fails.

Section 8.4 of NFPA-111 calls for the routine operational inspection and testing of standby battery equipment, including batteries, a critical component.

MOTIVE POWER

Motive power applications, such as forklifts, electric golf carts, and electric lawnmowers use batteries more closely related to stationary batteries than transportation batteries.

A Critical Component

Fork trucks play an often invisible, but critical role in today’s e-commerce driven economy.  With substantial movement of goods through high-volume distribution facilities, pallets upon pallets of product is being moved 24 hours a day by fork trucks.

Constant Operation

How are these batteries different than those in motor vehicles? Transportation batteries function as start/stop batteries. The primary discharge occurs when the vehicle is started. After that, it spends the rest of the drive time recharging.

Motive power batteries do not operate in this fashion. Instead of only being used to start the machinery, there is a continual discharge. These batteries are used constantly while in operation. This is similar to other stationary batteries in that they are used until depleted, or until the job is done, and then recharged after use.
