NERC Standards

The North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) is a not-for-profit regulatory organization operating in the United States, Canada, and the northern part of Baja California, Mexico.

NERC ensures reliability of the bulk power system by developing and enforcing system standards.

Reliability Assured

NERC Standard PRC-005 was created to assess the reliability of batteries used in the utility industry. NERC works to educate, train, and certify industry personnel for system awareness. This includes 4-, 6-, and 18-month maintenance requirements to be performed on VLA, VRLA, and NiCad batteries to remain compliant.

Compliance With NERC PRC-005

Midtronics provides the needed hardware to help meet each customer's NERC PRC-005 battery maintenance plan. From hand held battery testers to fully automated battery monitoring solutions. Along with hardware, Midtronics provides software to bring the total solution together. Midtronics can take battery test data from hand held battery testers and/or battery monitoring systems and provide automatic analysis of test data, alarming and data retention to ensure your critical power systems can perform when called upon and stay compliant.

STANDARD PRC-005 PROTECTION SYSTEM MAINTENANCE

VENTED LEAD-ACID ( VLA ) BATTERIES

Maintenance Activities
4 CALENDAR MONTHS
  • Verify station dc supply voltage
  • Inspect electrolyte level
  • Inspect for unintentional grounds

 18 CALENDAR MONTHS
  • Verify float voltage of battery charger
  • Verify battery continuity
  • Verify battery terminal connection resistance
  • Verify battery intercell or unit-to-unit connection resistance
  • Inspect cell condition of all individual battery cells where cells are visible – or measure battery cell/unit internal ohmic values where the cells are not visible
  • Inspect physical condition of battery rack

 18 CALENDAR MONTHS 
  • Verify that the battery can perform as manufactured by evaluating cell/unit measurements indicative of battery performance (e.g. internal ohmic values or float current) against the battery baseline 
OR
6 CALENDAR YEARS
  • Verify that the battery can perform as manufactured by conducting a performance or modified performance capacity test of the entire battery bank

VALVE-REGULATED LEAD-ACID ( VRLA ) BATTERIES

Maintenance Activities
4 CALENDAR MONTHS
  • Verify station dc supply voltage
  • Inspect for unintentional grounds

 6 CALENDAR MONTHS
  • Inspect condition of all individual units by measuring battery cell/unit internal ohmic values

 18 CALENDAR MONTHS
  • Verify float voltage of battery charger
  • Verify battery continuity
  • Verify battery terminal connection resistance
  • Verify battery intercell or unit-to-unit connection resistance
  • Inspect physical condition of battery rack
